Shoppin’ for Coffee

I really like good coffee. Ships I dock come in from all over the world so I’m always bein’ offered a cup o’ coffee from Costa Rica, Italy, Colombia, Greece, and a dozen other places that are known for good coffee. I must say I’ve become a coffee connoisseur. One time, a ship from Colombia came in and when I went aboard to dock, the captain asked me what I wanted to drink. I said “Coffee. Milk. One sugar.” He brought me a glass of milk and some sugar—totally missed the coffee. I knew he was thinking, No wonder the guy’s so fat; he drinks milk with sugar in it.

If I’m pickin’ my favorite beans, they’ll probably be a Costa Rican and Colombian mix. Any Colombian blend is just wonderful— full-bodied, and strong, strong, strong. I enjoy grindin’ the beans, but I also like the already ground product and I like it all so much, I’ve even just gone into the business, callin’ it Captain Michael’s Coffees. Paula sells it on her Web site and it’s also now in a few local supermarkets.

My favorite from all the blends I make is called Captain’s Choice, naturally. I take it with a dash of milk and an envelope of Splenda.

Paula loves the flavored coffees, so I’ve got one called Paula Deen’s Hazelnut Rum Cake and damned if it doesn’t taste exactly like her cake. She loves the Double Chocolate flavor, too.
